Stan Munro is not a student of architecture--just a really big fan. And he learned everything through books, the internet, History Channel, and a little something called "8th-Grade Algebra." Even though he told his teacher Mrs. Marion Winkelman, he would never use algebra... He's eating his words now.
Toothpicking has been a hobby since his 5th grade art teacher brought a toothpick project to the classroom. Stan stayed with it, and almost 30 years later... Stan makes a living at it.
With various careers as a true-crime writer, hospital administrator, and TV feature reporter, it was never a viable career until about 10 years ago when his wife Suzi was stricken with Polycystic Kidney-Liver Disease (PKLD), and Stan needed to be home for his wife. He started toothpicking, and in 2006, he sold his first Toothpick City exhibit to a museum in Spain, and in 2011--the best news--his wife received a double-transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. There are still complications, but she is doing better every day. Everything Stan does is for his wife. She is his inspiration, his muse, and the center of his world. Without her, you wouldn't be reading this...
"He actually helps around the house," Suzi admits. "But he's not bugging me all the time either. He's always working on something," she smiles. "He signs all his buildings:' I Luv Suzi'... and I think it's cute..."
Stan and Suzi live in North Syracuse, NY, with their 3 Shi-tzus: Ditto, Missy and Tater. Life is still good. |
